Someone asked me today what trend do I foresee for 2011? My answer was... more consolidation. Examples of consolidation would be tools and services like PlacePunch, TweetDeck and that new browser Flock (J/K) I mean RocketMelt that will be based on Chromium (Google Chrome). To unlock the "cool" features of RockMelt you have to log in via Facebook. Facebook spam is getting out of control and if the brand targeting pornapalooza doesn't stop then brands will start to think twice about the con's of positioning their brand, product or services on shared social platforms such as Facebook. I have to believe that either Facebook themselves or platform tool leaders such as Virture are fast at work crafting a solution. :::D

If not, maybe it's time to look at the difference between conversation and campaign style posts. It's no secret that growing your Facebook fan page is an artful mix of Owned, Paid and Earned media. That said, there's a big difference between knowing and doing.

Google launched their new ad campaign this week "Watch This Space". Essentially it's to show the world that when it comes to the digital media marketplace they are a lot more than Search. Facebook: What Were They Testing?
Here's a look at daily new fan growth #'s for (4) non-related brands, Coke, Red Bull, Oreo, and Buffalo Wild Wings. Interesting on how Sept. 13th was the low for all (4) brands, the 17th was the high, and it all ends on the 18th. What's the deal? An obvious testing period, but for what? Did they throttle up un-paid brand recommendations during this period? Did they activate this unprecedented fan growth to get brands excited about building a fan base, hoping to open up paid media budgets to continue new fan growth? I'd love to hear what you think/know about this.

The real question is how long will love last for Foursquare? Or, is Facebook trying to be all things to all people to their own detriment? The only real answer for now is that location based services (LBS) are here to stay. Brands still need to understand how to advertise for the now (when you visit), as opposed to the later (if you visit) more traditional style of advertising and marketing.
